Basin Analysis

03-04-2016 19:46

An introduction to the principles, methods and tools of sedimentary basin analysis.

The course focuses on the understanding of sedimentary basins within the framework of plate tectonics and integrates aspects of stratigraphy, sedimentology, geophysics, geodynamics, and sedimentary petrology to reconstruct depositional, post-depositional, and burial history. The application of basin analysis to sedimentary evolution of the Gulf of Suez /Red Sea basin will be introduced.

The lecture topics include: basin formation and tectonic setting, subsidence mechanisms, sedimentary responses to tectonic activity, lithospheric stretching and flexure, strike-slip tectonics and basin formation, dynamic topography, sediment generation, transport, and deposition, diagenesis and the evolution petrophysical properties, and applications to petroleum system. An introduction to various techniques used in basin analysis will include provenance analysis and sequence stratigraphy.
