This study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of promoting autonomous learning on solving some learning problems of underachieving language learners and improving their academic achievement.  The sample of the study consisted of 19 university-level students studying at the department of English at Dumyat Faculty of Education.  Eight of them represented the experimental group and eleven of them represented the control one.  The treatment given to the experimental group depended on promoting autonomous learning making use of dialogue journals.  Journals written by the researcher were used to assign certain tasks to be done by the subjects, and to give them feedback on their performances.  Meanwhile, the subjects_ journals were not only including the performed tasks but also the subjects_ reflection on their learning experiences.  Making use of qualitative as well as quantitative research techniques, the researcher found out that autonomy promotion was effective in solving some learning problems of underachievers and improving their academic achievement.  The study ended up with comments and conclusions based on the results of the field study.
